Project 1

Local Artist and Environment

Artist: Hathairat Kangval (Dao)

Title: Thai elephant

Medium: Canvas

Size:80x60

The artwork is named Delusion, which means a false belief. The artwork is inspired by a mural in the Thai temple. The mural that I saw is an old Thai painting style. Since the topic is about Thai culture I chose to paint the elephant because it represents Thailand and a motif for Thai objects. An elephant is also a royal, cultural and natural significant symbol. The aim of this artwork is to portray how the elephant is used for different purposes. This piece focuses on how the elephant is being used by Thai people so that it is becoming endangered species. In this painting I wanted to show the conflicting views. It is a conflict between people who respect the elephant and people who use the elephant for commercial purpose. Unconsciously these people are all hurting the elephants. The expressions of the elephant that shows on the painting is startled and confused by the action of human that acting on the elephant. The background is in red; it is the picture of burning forest, which represent violence, brutal, greed and conciseness. People in the painting are from different walks of life. These are including hunter, clown, royal army, elephant trainer, rich old man who support ivory hunting, villager, mahout and etc. They all have a different purpose for this elephant.I chose to use acrylic paint because it is the most suitable media to use on the canvas and sponge technique. I created a thick black line by using a small brush and sometime black marker. Highlight and shading are included in this painting. The form of the elephant is made larger than the figure of people to make the audience focus on the elephant. I made the action of people big so that the audience will be able to tell that they are all snatching an elephant. I include the pattern and texture on the clothes of the characters like small flowers or shapes to separate the job and state of each character. I put the gold leaf on the elephant to symbolize how valuable it is.

Intimate Portrait

Artist: Hathairat Kangval (Dao)

Title: Sai - Intimate Portrait

Medium: Bond paper

Size: 50x75

The artwork is a portrait of “Sai.” Sai is a blind sixteen year old girl who is interesting and outstanding, excelling in nearly everything she does . This intimate portrait was drawn to capture her serious, hardworking, and comforting presence. The first thing that drew me to her, was the eyes that she has. In the portrait, her eyes seem to be gazing forever into the eternal darkness that surrounds her. Reflecting the eyes is her facial expression which isn’t a frown or a smile but rather an expression of neutrality, of neither happy nor sad. Her facial expressions and eyes drive me to ask her about her history, her past experiences, and her stories. While it may not be seem like a complete portrait, this was an artistic influence that I received from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec whose drawings often are left with empty spaces, giving an unfinished look to the piece and also gives a place for eyes to rest on. As for my own drawing, I feel that the empty spaces give a subtle silence in addition to the facial expression and eyes of the model. I think that the empty spaces also give a deeper meaning to this portrait of Sai, because although there may be a time or place that everyone can rest, Sai does not have that privilege, due to her unfortunate circumstances. The portrait was made with color pencils because I feel that color pencils are most appropriate for drawing human faces, and I also decided to use drawing paper instead of a canvas as well. Using color pencils allows the piece to look cleaner and gives a “lightness.” which accentuates the emphasis on Sai and the empty space that was left on the rest of the paper. The reason for using color pencils is because I wanted to be innovative. This also ties into Sai’s personality which was captured like determined; having to live with some difficult odds require her to be brave and semi-adventurous in order to adapt to her changing everyday surroundings.

Project 3

Found Object

Artist: Hathairat Kangval (Dao)

Title: Electric Wire Satellite

Medium: Electric wire

Size: 45x55x8

“Electric Wire Satellite” is a sculpture that was created with electrical wires. The inspiration of this sculpture comes from the connection between the electrical wire, and the satellite. Wires are powerful tools that connect you to the far reaches of the Earth, much like the satellites that allow us humans to communicate at speeds unimaginable in the past. During the development stage of this piece, I first made a list of objects that could be put together to create a sculpture that would reflect an essential part of my life. The one object that stood out however, was the electrical wire. The electrical wire is light, ductile and flexible, which means it can be manipulated and sculpted with ease. These traits of the wire reflect the surge of electronics and new forms of virtually instant communication that we experience today. My initial plan however, was not the satellite but rather a cheetah which is known for its swiftness and ferocity, which can be compared to the lightning fast speed of the electrical wire and also the danger that it can potentially cause. I was at first going to create a cheetah because it is known for its speed and power in terms of strength, but I feel that the meanings behind the two did not link as well as it should. After considering several other ideas, I was in disarray and in a hurry to pick an idea. This confusion that happened, led and inspired me to the tangled and messy appearance of my wire sculpture.

Title: Ceremonial objects

Medium: Canvas

Size: 40x60

This artwork is inspired by seeing a set of ceremonial objects at the temple in Myanmar. I was struck of the beauty of the object, which made me see the connection between art and religion. A set of these 5 objects consist of paper umbrella, flag pole (tiny religious flag), the fan, triangle umbrella and paper streamer with seven days of the week represented by seven kind of animals. Each of these animals represents a different day in a week. Sunday is gallon or known as mythical bird, Monday is tiger, Tuesday is lion, Wednesday is elephant, Thursday is mouse, Friday is guinea pig, and Saturday is dragon. I can see the connection with art from these objects because the different in shapes, color, design and material of them, also to show the beauty with significant meaning of each object. The concept of this artwork is an illustration of the connection between art and Buddhism. During the Christmas break I listened to a monk sermon in Myanmar. One thing that I heard and make me interest from listening his sermon is about Buddhist monk rules and their daily life. He said monks are not supposed to dress in color and any fashion clothing, incase only with their brown or orange rope. They have to shave their hair, which means no hairstyles are allowed, no fancy accessories, no fashion shoes, no brand name or any kind of things that relate to beauty and color which I call it “art”. This plain attire gives them the state monkhood. It makes me wonder how can they live without art in their life. However, when I see the Myanmar ceremonial objects, which is also relate to Buddhist, it makes me think that religion does reflect art in someway. For this piece of art I paint the image of a set of Myanmar ceremonial object on the canvas and stick some of the real ceremonial objects on it. This is to make the picture look more realistic and make it as it is popping out from the painting.

Project 5

Choice Project

Artist: Hathairat Kangval (Dao)

Title: nightmare

Medium: oil paint

Size:

The concept of this project is to explore a topic, which has no real answer. Nightmares are something that everyone has experienced one time or another in the person’s lifetime. Do nightmares occur because of imagination or real life events? There are many unanswered questions about the cause of nightmares. The aim of this topic is to capture the nightmare scene of a person and draw as a visual presentation of it.

The white figure in the middle of the painting represents the girl’s mind, and the empty space is subject to being governed by different emotions, imagination and life events that occur. Dreams may be the combination of things that happen to a person, The word “nightmare” connotes an overwhelming and frightening tone that is depicted in the painting as distorted surrounding. Inspired by the chaotic state of the mind during sleep, the apparitions were drawn and blurred to represent the confusing surge of terrifying images that flash through during a bad dream. The skeletons and the spirits represent the fear of death. The jokers represent negative emotions that stay in the back of our minds. They may not be as striking like the other spirits, but it represents the confusion inside that indirectly haunts us. The blurry effect and overlapping images are inspired by two artists Christine Wu and Amelle Beaudroit.

Using oil paint for this project made it easy to fix the mistakes that happen during the process. Unlike previous works, I did not need to focus on neatness but I want the picture to appear blurry. For this paint most of the area is painted in black and white. The contrast makes the image more striking. Since this is the first time I have used oil paint on canvas, I feel satisfied with the outcome. One different I faced was in trying to make the images have the same blurry effect. I would need to find the right technique to overcome them. Since oil color cannot be washed with water, I had a hard time cleaning the brush to use another color. I ended up by using many brushes.I feel a sense of achievement since this is my first attempt at using oil paint on canvas. It is also hugest piece of canvas on which I have painted ghost-like figures to achieve a terrifying effect.
